POP ART: ANDY WARHOL

In the workshop about Pop Art we learn about two important artists: Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. In this session we'll take the characteristics of Pop Art and Warhol and we make our own picture. Choose a popular/everyday object, trace it four times and colour it respecting a colour code that you decide.

Here are some examples:
The same picture but coloured in a different code.

WHAT'S POP ART?

WHAT'S POP ART?

Pop Art is art made from commercial items and cultural icons such as product labels, advertisements, and movie stars. In a way, Pop Art was a reaction to the seriousness of Abstract Expressionist Art. Pop Art is meant to be fun.

What are the characteristics of Pop Art?

Pop Art uses images and icons that are popular in the modern world. This includes famous celebrities like movie stars and rock stars, commercial items like soup cans and soft drinks, comic books, an any other items that are popular in the commercial world. There are a number of ways that artists use these items to create art such as repeating the item over an over again, changing the colour or texture of the item, and putting different items together to make a picture.

Examples of Pop Art

Eight Elvises (Andy Warhol)

Eight Elvises uses a picture of Elvis Presley pulling a pistol out and aiming it at the viewer like a gunslinger from the Wild West. The picture of Elvis is repeated eight times. The repeating pictures get closer together as they move to the right and overlap each other giving the picture a feeling of infinity. This painting sold for over $100 million in 2009. You can see a picture of this painting here

Drowning Girl (Roy Lichtenstein)

This painting is made to look like a scene from a comic book. The girl is drowning and she yells out "I don't care! I'd rather sink, than call Brad for help!" The artist even painted the picture with the dots that are often seen in the color areas on comic books. You can see a picture of this painting here

Three Flags (Jasper Johns)

Jasper Johns painted a number of pictures of the American Flag. In this picture he paints three flags on top of each other. Each flag appears closer to the viewer, but gets smaller as well. You can see a picture of this painting here

MY WONDERFUL FAMILY

My Wonderful Family

Hi friends, it's time to read!

Read the text carefully and answer the questions below.

I live in a house near the mountains. I have two brothers and one sister, and I was born last. My father teaches mathematics, and my mother is a nurse at a big hospital. My brothers are very smart and work hard in school. My sister is a nervous girl, but she is very kind. My grandmother also lives with us. She came from Italy when I was two years old. She has grown old, but she is still very strong. She cooks the best food! My family is very important to me. We do lots of things together. My brothers and I like to go on long walks in the mountains. My sister likes cooking with my grandmother. On the weekends we all play board games together. We laugh and always have a good time. I love my family very much.

ST. GEORGE'S DAY

Hi mates, as you know, yesterday was St. George's day, we know it was different because we can't go to school, but we can celebrate reading a nice book or watching stories online.

Here I leave 2 options to choose:

GIRAFFES CAN'T DANCE

Gerald the giraffe loves to dance like everyone else, but he looks different than the rest of the animals, and he just can't seem to get it right. When the rest of the jungle animals make fun of Gerald, he almost gives in to despair- until a friendly cricket gives him some wise advice, ad Gerald discovers his own tune.

Usually we imagine kings are being very distant and separate from their people, The story teaches us that it's not always true.

THE ZOETROPE

Do you know what a zoetrope is? A zoetrope is one of several pre-film animation devices that produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs showing progressive phases of that motion. It was basically a cylindrical variation of the phénakisticope, suggested almost immediately after the stroboscopic discs were introduced in 1833. The definitive version, with easily replaceable picture strips, was introduced as a toy by Milton Bradley in 1866 and became very successful. Make a zoetrope with only 6 steps:
